I’m currently halfway through following the excellent CBTNugggets course: VMware vSphere 5.5 VCP5-DCV by .

I figured out that the reason was to do with me changing the hostname of the vCenter appliance which broke the self-signed certificate that was created when I first installed the appliance. If you change the IP address then you will also get this error.
The solution turned out to be quite simple:
- Log in to the vCenter appliance and select the Admin tab.
- Select the ‘Yes’ radio button where it says:”Certificate regeneration enabled’ followed by the submit button. (As per the screenshot below)
- Reboot the appliance.
- On rebooting the appliance, I noticed the following message on the console:
This was all that I needed to do and I was then able to log back in to vCenter and continue my studies.
