How to configure option 43 in Microsoft Windows DHCP Server

I was recently asked to configure option 43 in DHCP for our new IP phone handsets.  Microsoft Windows DHCP server allows for configurable vendor classes and here is how I did it.

1.  In the DHCP console,  right-click on the parent IPv4 node and select ‘ Define Vendor Classes…’

1

2.  Click the ‘Add…’ button on the DHCP Vendor Classes dialog:

3.  Fill in the details for Display name, Description and the binary data you have already obtained. (This was obtained by booting a handset and using Wireshark to look at the DHCP Discover packets.)  Then click the OK button:

3

4.  Once again, right-click the IPv4 node but this time select: Set Predefined Options…

4

5.  Ensure that the Option Class is your newly defined class and select the ‘Add…’ button:

6.  Complete the Option Type fields as shown in the screenshot below, ensuring that you use the number 43 in the code field.  Then click the OK button:

7.  Click the OK button:

8.  Right-click the server options (if you want this at the server level) and select ‘Configure Options…’
