How to RDP to Windows 2008 Server Core

In order to RDP from your administrative computer to your core server you’ll need to allow RDP access.

1.  On your core server, fire up the server configuration tool by typing the following:


2.  Select option 7: Remote Desktop, then type ‘E‘ to enable remote desktop.

3.  It’s then crunch time.  Do you want to enable Network Level Authentication or not?  For added security I would recommend that you do.  Don’t worry if you have XP clients that will need to RDP to this server as I will show you how to achieve that in my next post.

Select option 1: Allow only clients running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (more secure)

4.  Here’s what you’ll see if you have successfully enabled RDP:
